The Slobbajaws

Few things in this world make me happier than 40K Orks.

Here is my first go at painting up some Boyz.  I gotta say, painting these guys was an absolute pleasure.  The sculpts are just right for my skill level, giving me a perfect pallet to work from.

The slobber is done by gluing on some finished Water Effects.  Something about painting up a slobbering hoard is very appealing.

Also on the bench is my first attempt at Warmachine.  This Menoth Warjack is a bit more difficult for me as I don’t know what to do with all that open space.  It seems to be screaming for embellishment that I can’t give it yet.  I hope to have this guy finished in another couple of days and can get back to painting up some more orks

On the Bench

This weekend on my workbench produced two new gizmos.  First, I started work on my first from-scratch terrain.

At the pictured stage, this is just a few randomly cut pieces of foam insulation, cut with a hot wire cutter and primed black.  I plan from the top pieces to be flocked and have trees stuck in it , but keep the base removable so that the top can be easily moved if troops need to be stationed there.  Using two pieces also helps to elevate the woods so that they can block line-of-sight better.

Second, I have been pained watching some Warhammer players’ attempts at fielding hoard formations.  Even when a movement tray of the correct size is employed, the models fall and scatter more easily than usual.  To get around this problem I decided to magnetize my models.

I’ve tried magnetizing in several ways in the past with limited success, but it looks like I’ve finally hit upon a solution that works.

First, I line my tray with a ferrous metal.  For this I used the miniature conversion sheets from Alea Tools.

Next, I spent about an hour stuffing Green Stuff and a 1/16″ magnet in each of my dwarf’s bases.

And just like that I achieve a nice and tidy hoard formation that sticks to it’s tray in tricky circumstances.

Weekend Recap

Another satisfying weekend full of gaming goodness.  Starting with a quite Friday night facing my Dwarfs against my own Dark Elves.  I figured that playing against myself there was no way I could lose right?

Not exactly.  I had decided to take my time playing myself, paying attention to as many details as possible, hopefully to teach myself to pay attention to such things during a game against an opponent.  I’m not sure if I actually made more mistakes than normal or if I just noticed more because I was paying closer attention.

In any case, the Dark Elves managed to win by the very narrow margin of 131 points.  Nearly a draw.  If the Dark Elves had not left a Sorceress hanging out in the open to be shot to death by Rangers in the first turn, it would probably have been a more decisive Dark Elf victory.

The most decisive factor was magic.  The remaining Dark Elf sorceress with Lore of Shadows risked miscast again and again to give her unit of warriors Occams Mindrazor, which is quickly becoming my favorite spell for elves, as it allows Strength to be replaced with Leadership for an entire turn.  Coupled with Eternal Hatred, a small unit of warriors suddenly becomes a murder machine.

The weekend also saw me running two games of D&D 4e.  I love that the new addition allows me to run a fun 4 hour game with only an hour of prep.  Currently, I’m running two campaigns.  One is during lunch hours at work, and other on alternating Sundays.  The plot lines have been slowly drifting towards one another over the course of the last year.  The campaign world is a blend of the default D&D world and the old Spelljammer setting.  More on this in a later post.

Finally, this Saturday was my first time playing Heroclix.  I’ve avoided this game in the past, as the collectible aspect of the game too closely resembled Magic: The Gathering (As in, rich kids with lots of time on their hands always win).  I figured that with the right people, though it could be a fine distraction.

Enter Bill and Dave, two gentlemen with many, many, many, clix.  At 300 points, Bill fielded the Fantastic Four minus Susan Storm, Dave set up a loose Justice League themed team, and I put down a blend of Nextwave and Alpha-Flight (My goal is to collect the entire Alpha-Flight set and show some Canadian dominance).

Though I couldn’t stand to read the Heroclix core rules, once demonstrated, the game was easy to learn and intuitive.  The fun lies in watching representations of your favorite characters facing off against each other.  I was surprised that the game’s simple mechanics could still offer a feel for individual characters.  For example, I could feel the frustration of having 5 characters ganging up on Batman and still not be able to hit him while he hid in the trees.

I don’t think I see myself getting much deeper into this game, though.  It’s a good distraction, and would be more compelling if I were a stronger Marvel nerd, but I don’t feel the payoff is there for me to invest much time and money to it.

On the Bench

The Bretonnians went together easily.  The sculpts, as usual with Games Workshop, are great, but I noticed that the pieces don’t lock together as smoothly as they could.  I’m not sure why they decided to make each set of legs in two pieces, as you can’t do any parts swapping.  It would have made a more solid model if they had come as one part on the sprue.

From out-of-the-box to  fully trimmed and assembled only took two pleasant hours.  Very little frustration with this kit.

Speaking of frustration, though, I picked up one of the new D&D Lords of Madness sets.

Um, $20.00 for this?  Sure, there are some big models here, but how often am I going use anything but the guard and maybe the kobold?  This has been a long time complaint I’ve had with the D&D miniatures line.  Each box only has one or two things that are easily recognizable as a compelling monster or character.  I’ve got a cabinet full of large plastic lumps with eyes painted on them and bendy swords that I’ll likely never use in a game.  Not only that, but many of the sculpts in the later sets are just reissues with different paint jobs.  To me, they are no longer worth the cost.

With the Bretonnians together and primes, I’m free to start  new painting project.  It’s time for me to get started on my first Flames of War company.  My mid-war North African Italians have their first flesh coat applied.  I don’t plan to do anything fancy with them, I probably won’t even base them right now.  I just want something other than black rectangles for learning this new game.

On the Bench

I’m surprised I got as much done as I did last night considering that I only racked up an hour of bench time.  It did give me an opportunity to demonstrate the power of basing.

Here is what I started with.

And afterward.

Just a couple coats of  Graveyard Earth and a some static grass help the mediocre paint jobs to pop.

A quick primer coat on some 40K Orks that I swear I’ll play with someday.  Someday, soon?

Next on the bench, I’m starting my first Bretonnian unit.  I’ve been what I’ve called “Bretonnia Curious” since I started collecting a year ago.  Making the models look serviceable seems a steep challenge.  I could easily see myself spending months on just a handful of knights, adding detail after detail.

Still, I think the time has come to experiment.  If I decide the like the experience of putting these guys together I’ll probably start building a 1000 point force of Bretonnian boarder patrollers.

Finally, what showed up in the mail today?  Is the the book for what will likely become my next big obsession?  Oh yeah.

The opportunities for making this a Star Wars/Trek/BSG/Babylon 5 simulation are just too perfect.  I’ve only flipped through but for a first run game, this looks pretty sweet.  It doesn’t look like it bothers getting bogged down in a bunch of calculations, but strives to create a more cinematic war fleet experience.

What the bench looked like at the end of the day.

Big Sunday recap

Sunday being my day set aside for actually playing these games that I spend the rest of the week working on, here’s a recap of yesterday’s big fun.

This week was the Warhammer Fantasy League.  Though as the League Despot, I don’t get to take part in the standings, I still get to play games.  Due to an incident with another league member having his models chomped by a dog, I was in the surprise position of facing a new League Lizardmen player.  In the past, I have never been able to take down a Lizardmen army with my Dwarfs.

Today was no exception.

I thought I had this one in the bag at deployment as my opponent only brought 2 blocks each of saurus and skinks with a priest and a lord for characters.  I had a block each of warriors, longbeards and hammers with a lord and Battle Standard Bearer.  After deployment however, I did what I do too often. I stopped paying attention to the game.  I forgot rule after rule after rule and didn’t stay focused for an entire phase much less for an entire turn.  While being the Leage Despot does often tear my attention away from my games, it was no excuse for how poorly I performed.  My slaughter was handed to my opponent on a silver platter.

My second game of the day proved more amusing, if just as crushing.  Bob brought his Dwarfs into the league after tragically losing his Beastmen models and on a lark, decided to field a hoard unit of 40 Longbeards.  At my urging for more silliness, he made them rangers as well.  This works out better than one might expect.  Since they can deploy within charge range and have such a wide facing, it is easy to use this to force an opponent’s hand.  I only helped him by deploying my own forces on the line, giving myself the least amount of wiggle room.

Finally, I manged to squeeze in about half a game of Classic Battletech, introducing the rarest of wargammers, one who had never played CBT before, to this venerable game.  I ran my painted Clint and Cicada against an unpainted Jenner and Vindicator.  By midgame my Clint had taken quite a pounding, thanks to hatred from the Dice Gods.  By the third turn the Clint had fallen from a gyro critical in level 1 water and had every actuator in his left arm blown out.  My Cicada had managed to melt away most of the Vindicator’s armor, and criticals were on the horizon for my opponent, but by then the store was closing and he needed to get on the road so I called it a victory for him.

So in total, 3 games and 3 losses.
